A Geometry of Togetherness is a large-scale kite composed of lightweight fabric and a framework of interlocking tetrahedral cells. Its structure draws inspiration from Graham Bell’s early-20th-century experimental flying machines and the collective movements of starlings.

The kite’s surface is coated with lab-developed structural colors that echo those found in nature, such as on birds’ feathers, butterfly wings, and beetle shells. Unlike pigments, structural coloration arises from nanoscale surface patterns that reflect and refract light, producing vivid hues that shift with angle and illumination.

Nanostructures

align in precise arrangements to create iridescence, birds flock to protect one another, and tetrahedra interlock to give the kite its strength. Coloration, safety, and structure emerge when individual elements connect. Whether mathematical forms, microscopic structures, or living organisms, across different scales and systems, togetherness gives rise to something greater than the sum of its parts.

The structural colors were developed at LABORATORIUM, the experimental biolab for art and design at KASK, Ghent, Belgium, in collaboration with scientist Maria Boto and designer Heleen Sintobin.
The artwork was

commissioned

by Z33&nbsp; Museum.

Copy of found bread, copper, patina

A shelving system hosts a fragment of bread, consumed by birds in the city before being retrieved and formed in copper. From human consumption to avian feeding, and back again to human regard as an artwork, the project traces the journey of this fragment as it shifts between spheres of use and attention, bearing the traces of each encounter. Torn, pecked, ignored, retrieved, and electroformed, the object accumulates gestures enacted by multiple beings, condensing urban interactions into a layered material record.

Additionally, a mounted speaker directs field recordings through a glass tube filled with organic and inorganic materials. The structure recalls glass enclosures used to observe plant life, as well as early acoustic devices designed to render sound visible through the movement of matter. As vibrations travel through the tube, each element filters, reflects, and absorbs sound differently. Over time, within the enclosure, the materials dry, shift, and degrade, subtly reconfiguring the system and altering how vibration is transmitted.

Together, the works explore the continuous negotiation between living and non-living agents, as energy, matter, and attention circulate and transform one another within a shared environment.

Resonance, 2024

Coated glass sphere, aluminum profile, wood,

sensors, speaker, cables, electronics
125 x 35 x 35 cm.Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark

Resonance is an artwork designed to react to the detection of gravitational waves caused by merging black holes or neutron stars. It receives real-time alerts from the LIGO Scientific Collaboration about candidate events involving such collisions, and in response, generates audible waves influenced by the surrounding environment.

Equipped with multiple sensors, the artwork collects information about its immediate environment and detects the presence and motion of nearby living beings. When an alert is received, these sensors are triggered to gather data from the environment as well as about the activity of the artwork's devices. This data then serves as a parameter for shaping a generative real-time sound composition.

The resulting audio is emitted through a speaker housed within a glass sphere, with its physical properties influencing the final sonic output. It is as if these cosmic ripples could introduce disorder into the artwork, prompting it to generate sound waves. It is a piece that remains partially hidden until certain conditions are met, allowing the interplay between cosmic and terrestrial events to unfold.

The artwork was developed during the 2024 Art &amp; Science residency organized by the STRONG Group, a research team at the Niels Bohr International Academy dedicated to gravitational wave astronomy and strong-field gravity. The piece receives real-time alerts about candidate events from the LIGO Scientific Collaboration.
It is on permanent display at the NBI
building.

It’s all about trust, 2023Exhibition viewDe Verffabriek, Ghent, Belgium

The exhibition examines time, trust, causality, and phenomena beyond direct experience. At its core is the artist’s decision to transfer every light source from his home into the exhibition space, leaving his residence in complete darkness. This act invites questions about evidence, belief, and the limits of perception, while also considering how tools and instruments shape what we are able to observe and understand.

<img width="5060" height="3374" width_o="5060" height_o="3374" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/72892872663e57bcc18b711769adda00fb9fcc647d4ad37725c238d3185b1bae/It-s-all-about-trust-all-the-lights-of-my-house.jpg" data-mid="238495592" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/72892872663e57bcc18b711769adda00fb9fcc647d4ad37725c238d3185b1bae/It-s-all-about-trust-all-the-lights-of-my-house.jpg" />

It’s all about trust, 2023Exhibition viewDe Verffabriek, Ghent, Belgium

Ceiling and floor lights, desk lamps, bedside lamps, and hallway and bathroom fixtures, all the light sources from the artist’s home, have been relocated to the exhibition space, leaving his residence in complete darkness for the duration of the exhibition.

Can the work serve as evidence of an unseen event beyond the exhibition space? If so, does the spectator become a witness? This piece relies on trust as the audience cannot verify the claim but only accept the artist’s account.

What does the artist’s home look like without light? Where would these lamps be if not here? Likewise, where else might I be if not in this space? These imagined scenarios remain speculative, known but never experienced. This piece is an act of reasoning, trust, and cost-sharing.

The exhibition also features a ceiling-mounted holographic fan that recreates the color of a star as it would appear to the human eye in space.

The device displays a bright bluish disk, with its color derived from studies that analyze stellar spectra and translate this information into a representative hue, much like how our eyes perceive light through cone cells. Rapidly spinning RGB LEDs create the illusion of a continuously glowing star. Through simulations, models, and instruments, we extend our vision, study celestial bodies beyond our reach, and perceive scales that would otherwise remain inaccessible.

This levitating, rotating blue disk offers a glimpse of a star’s color as if seen directly, and at the same time functions as an allusion to something that exists independently and in the absence of any direct human observer.

The presented color is derived from the available database provided by
Jan-Vincent Harre and Rene Heller, "Digital color codes of stars," Astronomical Notes, 2021.

From time to time, whistling sounds echo through the space, accompanied by flickering light from two ceiling-mounted screens. The brightness of the light shifts in response to the intensity of each whistle.
These sounds come from a wooden whistle, crafted from a branch of a sweet chestnut tree that took root

outside the city

in the early 17th century. Its construction follows a simple method with origins tracing back to the Middle Iron Age.

This interplay of sound and light emerges from a fusion of elements, materials, and technologies, each rooted in different eras and regions, converging in a single moment.

If we watch long enough, 2023PVC window film
Berg van Barmhartigheid

, Ghent, Belgium

A thermal camera was used to capture the heat emitted from the window’s surface on a sunny day. Multiple images of the entire glass surface were collected, one for each pane of glass, and then printed on PVC sticker film. These printed films were reapplied to the window, each aligned with the corresponding measured area.

This translucent material allows exterior light to color the hall’s interior with shades derived from the thermal patterns of that particular summer day. The window bears traces of its former state, and

the sunlight that warmed the glass the day of the measurement now continues as the source that colors the interior in yellowish hues.

Here, the act of measuring interferes, imprints, and leaves behind traces that shape what is observed. The window is transformed into a layered surface, at once itself and its record, past and present, doubled by its own capture.

The analysis of reality produces reality, 2022Engraved potatoes

Polo del ‘900, Turin, Italy
Expo: Every food is a landscape
Curated by

Marco Trulli

A network of engraved triangles spreads across the potato’s surface, beginning from a single hexagon and expanding outward. This triangulation assigns a topological invariant to the potato: the Euler characteristic, defined by the number of formed vertices, edges, and faces.

The very act of engraving initiates the processes it seeks to trace, accelerating the potato’s decomposition and the deformation of the triangles on its surface. As time passes, the potato softens and deforms, the incisions deepen, darken, and stretch. Yet the triangulated pattern persists, as the initial triangles are remapped into newly deformed forms, preserving the number of vertices, edges, and faces, that is, embodying the invariant character of the Euler characteristic.

Here, natural decay echoes the transformations studied in topology, dissolving boundaries between matter and analysis, abstract change, and change in time. Through this interplay, the potato is at once simply a vegetable and a mathematical model. An organism, a record, and a transformation: a surface where abstraction, change, and decay coincide.

Installation view, het Hem, Zaandam, the Netherlands.

Two videos, simultaneously appearing as batons and timekeepers, are playing in a repeat. A schedule of the actual feeding process of two snakes, mapped out in print, is mounted high on an adjacent wall. The cutting of a hole in a window and an object based on Galileo’s notes hanging in it completes the three components of this installation, or a mini-scheme of celestial bodies, metrics, and digestive enzymes.

	<img width="5030" height="3169" width_o="5030" height_o="3169" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9de47397fce08eaa9f05828ea41bf3cb46f384a033710e008a4a20b196978357/6.jpg" data-mid="87663266" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9de47397fce08eaa9f05828ea41bf3cb46f384a033710e008a4a20b196978357/6.jpg" />

In 1610, Galileo recorded for the first time the shifting positions of Jupiter’s moons, marking each observation with ink and the corresponding time. These notes were not mere representations but evidence, material traces of celestial motion. A one-to-one drawing that once circulated became an active instrument of knowledge, enabling others to verify, extend, and reinterpret his discoveries.

In this piece, a circular hole was cut into a window, and within it, one of Galileo’s notes depicting Callisto has been cast in resin and suspended. Subject to the wind, it moves freely, continuing to interact with its environment as a material that shapes perception and
thought.

Two screens play looping videos, each paired with a soundscape that amplifies the room's hypnotic atmosphere. Onscreen, slowly rotating objects, digital reconstructions of real forms, turn steadily around an axis.

Matter, frequencies, and patterns undergo continuous migrations and transformations across scales, media, and operations. The videos act as timekeepers, spiraling sequences that align sensory perception to their tempo, drawing the viewer into a perceptual loop.

The duration of the exhibition is mapped onto a graph illustrating the feeding and digestion cycle of two snakes living in a pet shop 30 km from the exhibition space, where Mr. Frank works. The varying nutritional needs of each animal determine the time required before the cycle begins again, creating a pattern that shapes the feeder’s weekly routine.

This multicolored pattern is a form shaped from the intersection of the snakes’ eating and digestive schedules, the methodology of pictorial representation, and the attentive care of Mr. Frank.
